The EC2 API Tools is a convenient set of Java command-line utilities which ease access to the various aspects of the Amazon EC2 service.
These tools enable you to communicate with the Amazon EC2 service using a standardized set of commands and to automate repetitive tasks.

The tools described below have been designed to be used in a variety of scenarios:

To create new accounts on Amazon EC2

To configure new accounts created with the EC2 console

To manage the termination of running instances

To manage the running processes and the respective resources

To scan running instances

To control the components and their interaction with each other

To create new security groups

To create and manage multiple instances of a service in a specified region

Usage of the tools

Each tool includes a short usage section, which describes the purpose of the tool.
At the end of each usage section, we describe the command line options and options supported by each tool.

When you run a command, the output of the tool is formatted in such a way that it can be easily understood.
If you run the tool with no arguments, you are presented with a menu with a list of available options.
At the bottom of each menu option is a short usage description.
The usage of the tools is explained in more detail in the following sections.

Each tool is more complex than one may think.
Remember that the tool is meant to be used in combination with the EC2 API Programming Guide.
Also, keep in mind that the EC2 API Programming Guide is released by Amazon at no charge and is available online.

The EC2 API Tools are written in the Java programming language.
The EC2 API Tools package can be installed easily using the installed JDK.
Here are the steps to install the tool:

Download the package.

Extract the package to a temporary directory.

The scripts require no input for completion.

The scripts do not use escape sequences that may be interpreted by the shell or may render the script output in an unsafe manner.

No data is stored on the server system by the script.

The scripts are not included in a zip archive.

The -h option to the scripts is optional because all the commands are self-documented.

The -v option is often ignored because the scripts, while performing verbose tasks, are also required to output helpful messages about what they are doing.

The first three tests are also performed with the X checker utility (see xcheck -h) and the X checks pass for all the scripts.

Scripts have been written so that they can be used by users for whom some scripting experience is already present. Scripts contain little more than a shell script that is redirected to a file by the script that is being used.
There are no intermediate scripts that are provided, so you cannot follow the execution of a shell script from the main script.
If there were any intermediate scripts, the script that is calling the script could be very different from the script that is actually being called.

Amazon EC2 is a web service that provides an on-demand computing platform.
To achieve this, Amazon EC2 creates and runs virtual machines or instances (virtual servers).
An instance represents a physical server.
The computing resources of an instance are abstracted from the computing resources of physical server.
Amazon EC2 lets you control many aspects of your virtual server.
To start an instance, you must provide a set of configurable attributes that define the computing resources of your instance.
Once started, an instance operates like a physical server except that you can get the result of an API action from the instance in under a minute.
