Development History

Early versions of AutoCAD have two separate codes running. The first, dubbed “IHN”, was written by Tim Sauer, who formed a company called International Harvester and incorporated it in 1983. Tim’s wife, Barb, persuaded him to give up AutoCAD, which he had been working on in his free time for six months. She also used her MBA to persuade International Harvester to use AutoCAD instead of other CAD programs and convince the company that Tim’s vision for AutoCAD would help them to provide superior CAD services.

Tim was heavily involved in the development of the software from the beginning. The project was initially called IHN, for “International Harvester Network”, and was later renamed HNC, for “Hands-On Computer”. In 1984, when the company formed in the UK, “HNC” was changed to “Harley Davidson Network”.

In 1984, Harvester set up a CAD support service in Duluth, Minnesota, and in September 1985, they had their first CAD management system. The first prototype of AutoCAD was released in December 1982. IHN used a single code for both the menu system and the actual drawing programs. IHN was written using Basic for the text and graphics and AppleSoft for the menu system.

Tim then joined a Canadian company, Bruichladdich, in order to work on the computer version of Bruichladdich Whiskey labels. The company name was changed to the Bruichladdich Network. Tim left the company in 1986 when it changed its name to Autodesk. The company continues to use AutoCAD, and expanded the application to cover a number of other areas, including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture, and surveying.

The second code, often called “M”, began development in 1984. It was written by David L. Smith, using tools purchased from Apple and the Borland Object Studio and the Apple Logo. This code is largely responsible for the original AutoCAD’s sleek appearance. When Autodesk bought the company in 1992, a year after IHN was sold, the M code was taken over by the new ownership and renamed to AutoCAD R, or AutoCAD Rewritten.

I want to implement a std::map using the source member of std::map. I tried this. I want to add a nested class to a generic class (or template) which contains the key and its source.

Like US officials, the Department of Homeland Security was investigating the hack of its employees’ email accounts but did not find evidence the attackers had broken into the agency’s main email system, a source close to the investigation said on Monday.

In March, the source said, the hackers reached out to the Computer Emergency Response Team at Homeland Security to notify them of their presence in its networks but did not compromise the main agency system.

The source, who requested anonymity, confirmed the agency was working with the FBI to investigate the attack, which targeted eight current and former employees of the department’s internal security arm.

The department said in a statement Monday that “we can confirm that we have now found the identity of the malware used in the attack.”

The hackers gained access to “administrative email accounts,” the department said.

“The department has examined all affected accounts and will continue to review all accounts for potential malicious activity. We are in the process of notifying affected individuals to provide our most expeditious way to remediate any malicious activity. Additionally, the department has implemented additional measures in an effort to mitigate the ability of the individual who exploited the administrative email accounts to issue additional threats,” the department said.

The source who requested anonymity said the agency had found no evidence the hackers broke into the department’s main email system, or the other systems where they tried to break in. The hackers used a form of malware known as “OSX/Tiger Flaw” and had “compromised a network to get in and [then] moved laterally,” the source said.

The department said the hackers sent an email to the Computer Emergency Response Team in March, prompting the agency to review its systems. The hackers gave the agency information about the email addresses, but the email traffic was not sent directly to the department, the department said.

“There was no indication that the data was being moved to other malicious email accounts or used for any malicious purposes,” the department said.
