Is there a way to generate a test environment for ArcMap?
I’m fairly new to ArcMap, and I have some ideas of how it would be possible to create a more cost-effective testing environment for my programming.
Ideally, I would like to do a test version of the data I plan to use in the main production version of the map. This could be performed at two levels:
Mocking out different layers, either by overriding specific functions (eg. I find the getServiceParameters and editing out everything but the layer name), or
An almost completely automated testing of the map, where the data is placed, and all the functions use the data, and hopefully creates a copy of the data.
The idea is that in the final map, the test data would be layered, with all layers that are left in the mock map, masked, with the layer names displayed in a certain font.
I’ve done some research and it seems like it could be possible to create such a version of the data with ArcObjects, but that requires way too much code, and I haven’t been able to find any way of doing it with Python.
I hope this doesn’t sound too much like a glorified “why don’t you just do it for free” question, but I’m just curious if anyone else has had this thought before, and if it’s possible to do with ArcMap, and/or
