Autodesk had its beginnings in the 1980s as an “academic research company” called Encore, which was founded in 1981 by a young engineering graduate who had been working on his Ph.D. at Stanford University. In 1982, Autodesk, Inc. was incorporated and moved out of Stanford University into its own campus in Silicon Valley, in order to better focus on its products and marketing. The new company came into being in the late 1980s, along with an initiative to design an affordable general-purpose computer platform, codenamed “Aricle.” The new operating system was based on the PDP-11, a “big iron” platform, and was used to develop a series of software applications, among them a vector graphics and CAD system.

In 1989, a release candidate version of the CAD software was introduced.

The company’s CEO at that time was Gary Pruitt. In 1998, Pruitt stepped down, and was replaced by Michael D. Miller. That year, the company went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange and the software was licensed to outside developers.

In early 2001, the company changed its name to “Autodesk”. The name “Autodesk” was not an acronym but was chosen in order to focus on the company’s purpose, which was to create software that would revolutionize the way people created things.

The first version of Autodesk AutoCAD, later named AutoCAD LT (“low-tech”), was launched in 1989. Two years later, an upgraded version, AutoCAD, was released. These early versions, which were developed to run on personal computers, were only capable of 2D drafting. The software used the PostScript vector graphics language, which was then considered to be the most powerful graphics language at the time.

since its 2007 release, AutoCAD supports using Python scripting language to control the software. This is achieved through AutoLISP. The AutoLISP programming language is a high-level language designed for programming systems on the desktop that are small and powerful. AutoCAD Python is similar to AutoLISP, but it is object-oriented, platform independent and much more stable, reliable, and easy to use than its predecessors.

The User Interface of AutoCAD consists of three main components: the graphical user interface (GUI), the command-line interface (CLI), and the scripting languages.

Graphical User Interface
The GUI allows users to make drawings and save them in several formats, including SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) and DXF. Since AutoCAD 2016, a new user interface for the Office 365 clients, users can add a toolbar to their work area to have access to the necessary tools, while the “View” menu of the ribbon has also been redesigned.

AutoCAD has always featured a ribbon-style toolbox, giving users the ability to drag and drop toolbars and use macros on the drawing. With the new 2016-2019 releases, the ribbon has also been redesigned to be a tabbed interface with drag and drop toolbars. This new user interface has also received criticism from many.

The ribbon contains the various functions and commands available to the user, and while in some cases the ribbon is hidden, many are part of the more extensive command-line interface.

Command-line Interface
The command-line interface (CLI) allows users to define macros or automate actions through a command-line interface. The most common commands available are available in command-line mode and are accessed through the Windows Start menu. Some AutoCAD commands can also be accessed via the Microsoft Command Prompt window.

When creating macros, AutoCAD allows the user to save and load the macros from a text file, which can be edited using a text editor, or a.bat or.cmd file. The command-line interface allows creation of macros using a macro-building tool that converts a series of commands to an.RMD or.MRM file.

In addition to the “standard” commands, AutoCAD supports many additional commands such as those related to the import and export of drawing files.
