AutoCAD’s development history can be divided into three major periods: 1982-2007, 2008-2016, and 2017-present. The version number of AutoCAD is based on the year of the release. The year “2002” was retained in version numbers for any software addition or modification that took place in the intervening year, such as the addition of a feature or bugfix (e.g., 2005 – “2010”). The numbers were reset for each major release.
The first version of AutoCAD was 2.0. The developer’s discussion list (LISTSERV) had already released the 1.0 version, followed by the 1.0.1 update, so the year “1” was retained for the first version. However, it was incorrectly indicated as “Year 1” in the version number. The version number of AutoCAD was extended to 2.0 in 1997. It has been consecutively extended with the release of each major version.
Two special versions of AutoCAD were released for the purpose of testing. The 1982-1987 version was used to test new features in AutoCAD 2, and the 1987-2003 version was used to test new features and for testing of bugfixes.
The third period began in 2007, when Autodesk announced the availability of the first Windows Vista support version, AutoCAD LT. Version number “2010” was retained for this period.
In 2016, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT 2017. New features were added, such as app snapshots, designing in PDF, collaborative editing, and others.
In 2017, Autodesk released AutoCAD Architecture 2017. Version number “2020” was introduced for this period.

Application programming interface
AutoCAD provides an extensive application programming interface (API) to facilitate application development. The majority of the API functions are located in the dll and dlll files.
