jquery click function not working inside a li element

im new to this stuff and im probably missing some bit of knowledge but i cant seem to get jquery to work inside a li element. The code below will open a overlay when you click on the links, this bit works fine.
However, when clicking the link to open the overlay, the click function is ignored and i can still click the link. i cant use an a element because the links are drop down links and so opening the overlay is the link to a different item.
Any help would be appreciated. i have included all the code.
