Heart sounds are one of the most common illnesses our patients have. You can recognize the different sounds of the heart by the following description:
1. AVL – The sound of the blood going back in the heart. A very strong sound.
2. PR – The sound of the blood going from the heart to the lungs. A very strong sound.
3. S1 – One of the first sounds of the heart, it usually occurs around the third heart sound. It isn’t a very strong sound and when it occurs, there is a whooshing sound.
4. S2 – First heart sound, not very loud. Often occurs in the top left of the screen.
5. S3 – Second heart sound, the same as the first but louder. Often occurs on the right side of the screen and beats in the top left of the screen.
6. S4 – Third heart sound, very loud and beats usually in the top right of the screen. There is often an accent of the second heart sound.
7. S5 – Fourth heart sound, very loud and beats in the top left of the screen. There is always a stroke accent.
8. S6 – Fifth heart sound, very loud and beats in the top left of the screen. There is a heavy accent of the third heart sound.
9. S7 – Sixth heart sound, usually very strong and beats in the top right of the screen.
10. S8 – Seventh heart sound. Often beats in the middle of the screen or in the bottom right.
11. S9 – Einth heart sound, very strong and beats in the middle of the screen or in the bottom left.
12. S10 – Tenth heart sound, this is the loudest and it beats in the middle of the screen or in the bottom left of the screen.
13. S11 – Eleventh heart sound, beats in the middle of the screen or in the bottom right and is almost like a ‘dip’.
14. S12 – Twelfth heart sound, beats in the bottom right of the screen.
15. RS – The last sound of the heart. Sometimes beats on the left but is common on the right.
16. P – Period of silence in the middle of the screen or in the bottom left.
17. FV – The first heart murmur. It’s not very loud but it’s noticeable.
