For the LTP induction protocol used, the PPC is maximally depolarized (by at least 6 mV) for well over 50 ms as shown by our data (Fig. [1d](#Fig1){ref-type=”fig”}) and is, thus, expected to have a rather large depolarization-activated I~m~ current. The afterhyperpolarization (AHP) was estimated on the basis of the *V*~H~ and *t*~H~ components, and the magnitude of the AHP is relatively constant. The data shown in Fig. [1e](#Fig1){ref-type=”fig”} indicate a decrease of the I~m~ during synaptic maturation. This trend was also reported for LTP and LTD induction protocols in hippocampal synapses^[@CR27]^. However, the changes are very subtle and probably do not significantly affect the temporal precision of the LTP induction protocol as compared to the WT^[@CR24]^. We do not know yet what causes this decrease of the I~m~ as we did not observe a change in the dendritic morphology, nor in the distribution of VGCCs (data not shown).

Overall, our data suggest that the reduced Ca^2+^ influx during LTP induction leads to a weaker LTP induction in the PPC synapses. This weakened LTP is likely to be compensated by “stabilizing mechanisms” put in place by the maturational down-regulation of VGCCs and the concurrent increase in the leak conductance (Fig. [3](#Fig3){ref-type=”fig”}). This hypothesis is supported by the observation that the combination of STIM1 deficiency with a reduction in the VGCC conductance can produce larger LTP as
