Gao Deyu (1894–1971) (Manchu:; ) was a Chinese painter and calligrapher of Manchu descent, best known for his Huanci, or “southland” school of landscape paintings. He lived and worked in China most of his life, spending the first part of his career as an illustrator in the northern capital Beijing, and teaching. His paintings have been shown at the Venice Biennale, and he has received the China Art Association Gold Medal.
Life and career
Gao Deyu was born in Nian, Manchuria, China, in 1894, and was taught calligraphy from a young age by his father, a local scholar.
He was employed in the former Beiping Street Department in Beijing, making sketches, prints, illustrations, and paintings for the former Postal Services of the Beijing government.
He became known in his late twenties for a series of paintings of the south, the traditional home of the Manchu people, based on his travels in the 1930s.
The paintings from this period were in a thick, soft style, showing people in distant landscapes in natural colors.
His style changed over the years, becoming lighter in tone.
He began to paint in more realistic natural colors, and to show the traditions, history and culture of the south, following archaeological discoveries in 1935 and 1936.
His style of painting a deeply personal study of the land and people of the south, became known as “Huanci” or “Southland School” of painting, and gave him greater fame, though this success was not marked until after his death.
Gao Deyu taught at the Wuda Academy of Fine Arts from 1931 to 1950, and was the principal of the academy from 1949 to 1950.
He held exhibitions in Beijing and, in 1936, at the Venice Biennale.
He won the Gold Medal from the China Art Association in 1950.
Gao died in Beijing in 1971.
