Automatic connections to mysql database on startup
I’d like to automatically connect to my database via mysqli if the database connection is not found when my website starts.
I know how to do it but it has to be done manually – but this is not what I would like to have in my program because I would like to handle it automatically.
Is there a way to do this?

Put this into a file named something like’maintenance.php’

Put a cronjob into /etc/cron.hourly (assuming you run Ubuntu)
@reboot /usr/bin/php /path/to/maintenance.php
This works for the most part (it’s not that robust) but if you need it to work more reliably you could:
Install phpMyAdmin
Configure the cronjob to run once every 5 minutes (thus you can open and close the connection properly, too)
Also, if you plan on only using the database once, and disconnecting properly afterwards:
Include the database connection in a file named something like’maintenance.php’ – make sure it’s included before the connection is made
Disable the mysql part of the PHP configuration (in php.ini)
In the end you don’t have to do all of the above; all you need is a file named maintenance.php with a conditional if (!$link) {… } block.
If you’re not familiar with the structure of a PHP file, you’ll have to put it in a file called something like’maintenance.php’ and then name it as such when you run it via a cronjob.
It’s a pretty safe way to do things, though you do need to have the “feed the horse” type of coding.
