When editing images in Photoshop, you should first decide what you want to accomplish and then plan accordingly. If you just want a digital file to use on your website or email, then whatever size works well for you is fine. If you’re planning on sending an online file, you should try to send a resolution that is good enough to see the image properly.

Finally, and this might be obvious, be sure you have enough time to work on your image. It may take some time to modify a picture in the right way. A slow computer can make the process even slower. If you’re working on your computer at home, be prepared to work for hours without a break. It’s a good idea to get out and walk or do some household chores every now and again while you work.

After you’ve got an idea of what you’re doing and enough time to commit to your project, you’re ready to start editing. Chapter 11 offers some guidelines and helpful tips on how to work through an image in Photoshop.

Herbal products are generally perceived as safe and there is evidence that these products are effective against infectious diseases. Numerous scientific studies have been carried out with a wide range of phytotherapic herbs, but, there is a lack of scientific evidence regarding the in vitro anti-infective and cytotoxic properties of these products. Therefore, this study seeks to develop a scientific investigation to evaluate the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of a water extract (W, aqueous extracts of herbal leaf powder) and methanol extract (M, alcoholic extracts of herbal leaf powder) of Poncirus trifoliata as well as five alpha-terpinyl cinnamate derivatives (ED1-ED5) derived from W and M of the hydro-ethanolic leaf extract of P. trifoliata. Anti-infective activity of the extracts/derivatives was evaluated using a microdilution method against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria as well as human fibroblasts (MRC-5). M and W extracts showed strong antimicrobial activities against the tested bacteria; while M was less cytotoxic. Both M and W extracts were less effective in vitro against Gram-negative bacteria, but they still retained good in vitro activity against Gram-positive bacteria. ED1, ED2, ED3, and ED4 presented a very good selectivity index (SI > 600) against S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. M and W extracts also showed cytotoxic activity against MRC-5. “There was a big emphasis on species preservation there, but more of a life preservation,” Pino said. “We wanted to see that they weren’t necessarily going to go extinct. We wanted them to go on living.”

The species featured in the exhibit are only a small percentage of the approximately 5,000 species of birds in Canada. But Pino said the program hopes to prove that by involving conservators and wildlife care professionals in the initial rescue and release of animals, they will be able to find homes for all of them.

The project, known as the Bird Rescue Fund, has partnered with the Canadian Wildlife Service to bring birds back from the brink of extinction. This includes the breeding of baby eagles that were born with a genetic defect that means the wings don’t develop properly.

Pino’s team will monitor the status of the birds until they’re old enough to make the transfer to the wild.

The Birds of Paradise exhibit features the cutest and cuddliest species of birds in the world, ranging in size from four inches to around two feet in height. Also featured is the Azuresaura azurea, also known as the azure kingfisher, in an interactive display where visitors can touch and even play with the birds.

“These are the most charismatic and cuddliest birds in the world,” Pino said.

The exhibit is one of several features at the Audubon Centre during the 10-day Canadian Science Festival, which also features a hands-on science discovery centre and home to many different experiments and hands-on games for visitors of all ages.

“We have a lot of family-oriented attractions this year, and we have events that go on throughout the day,” Pino said. “We also have an iconic sculpture by b.c. artist Stephen Reid that we’ve recently been unveiling.”

People can attend musical performances by the Joffrey Ballet and the Royal Conservatory Music Department’s school, and to learn about geology and water pollution.
