Analysing images with the histogram

The histogram (Figure 14-6) provides information that helps you assess how bright or dark your image is.

To access the histogram, first press the Info button on the Shooting Menu and then select Histogram from the Shooting Menu that appears, as shown in Figure 14-7. The bottom of the screen shows the histogram, and each number shows the brightness of the pixels of the image. A histogram shows mostly white in the right side and mostly black in the left side. At the top and bottom of the screen are the brightest and darkest pixels, respectively, in your image.

When you change exposure, your histogram also changes. The range of your exposure is determined by the total number of pixels that are white or black. A low-contrast image has few black or white pixels; a high-contrast image has many white or black pixels. For example, if your image is poorly exposed, the histogram will be mostly black, indicating that you may want to increase the exposure. If your image is exposed very well, the histogram will be mostly white, indicating that you may want to decrease the exposure.

A simpler, less powerful editing tool? Don’t expect top-notch professional features and image editing perfection, but you will be able to produce high-quality output. At its core, Photoshop Elements is a way to produce standard-sized, full-colour photos.

Adobe Photoshop is one of the most popular graphics programs in the world, used by both professionals and hobbyists. Its name is derived from Adobe Photoshop Elements, a collection of ten online services which generate high-quality photos and illustrations.

A photographer can edit their own photos using Adobe Photoshop, as well as use the program to create images for other graphic artists such as web designers, cartoonists, illustrators and game designers. Photoshop can be used to:

Edit images, including cropping, retouching, colour and brightness adjustments, and photo-editing.

Create new images, including photographs, line art, vector designs, illustration, and text.

Create publications, including books, brochures and posters.

Create websites or web graphics, including logos, buttons, banners, and site backgrounds.

Computer-generate graphics, such as 3D and typography.

3. Adobe Photoshop Elements

It contains most of the features of the professional version, but with fewer features, a simpler user interface and a number of useful online services.

4. What are the Adobe Photoshop Elements features?

In addition to the basic tools, Adobe Photoshop Elements offers online services which can be used to make photos or graphics.

5. Photoshop Elements X and Photoshop X

The software comes in two versions: Adobe Photoshop Elements X and Photoshop X. Photoshop Elements X, which is designed for professionals, is more powerful than Photoshop Elements.

Both of them have the same basic features and capabilities.

Adobe Photoshop Elements can be bought as either a single product for around £49.99, or as part of a bundle with other Adobe programmes, for around £85.99 for a suite of Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Acrobat.

As a result of the wave of populist sentiment that swept across Europe in recent years, populist parties have become better organized and more media-savvy than mainstream parties. The Golden Dawn, the neo-Nazi party that won 17 percent of the vote in Greece’s national elections in June, has successfully positioned itself as a party of “patriots” and “nationalists.” Other European populist parties have used similar strategies to attract voters.

Western democracy is not broken — it’s under attack. The biggest threat to democratic principles is far-right nationalism rather than far-left communism.

The rise of fascism should terrify us.

Since the 2008 financial crisis, populist parties have sprung up across Europe. While a broad spectrum of political parties exists in Europe, populist parties focus on blaming others for the problems of the country and the world. The Golden Dawn has been praised by many for its anti-immigrant views, its anti-establishment rhetoric, and its party’s economic policies.

The party advocated cutting off the benefits of all non-Greeks living in Greece and improving employment by cutting all government spending. Its leader, Nikolaos Michaloliakos, has also called for the deportation of all immigrants and added that “the Hellenization of minorities should be done in a moral and physical way.”

While there is concern about the possible rise of neo-Nazi and other far-right parties in Europe, many experts don’t believe right-wing populist parties will become a serious threat to democracy. Right-wing populists tend to focus on the corruption of the political elites while mainstream parties focus more on economic and social policies. Furthermore, far-right parties tend to focus more on nationalism than communism. Far-right populists are primarily focusing their attention on the so-called “establishment,” but they don’t advocate revolution or violent attacks on democratic systems.

Meanwhile, democracy is under attack. In recent years, Europe has faced a wave of populism, including the rise of a party like the Golden Dawn. Mainstream politicians and experts have accused the Golden Dawn of advocating violence and Nazism, arguing that these messages serve to attract otherwise disenfranchised voters. In fact, the party is the most popular in Greece — something that establishment politicians claim is why they lost popularity.
