First, you’ll need to figure out what kind of person you’re looking for. Are you looking for someone who will make you happy right now? A partner to take with you on life’s adventures? An unattached plaything to go to bed with? Modern dating is all of those things, and more. (Hint: It’s not all about finding Mr. or Ms. Right—just about finding someone who wants the same things you do and who is willing to learn with you. We’ve got the low-down.)

Second, you’ll need to get out there and date. There’s the good news. These days, you don’t have to be a “good catch” to attract a potential date, and anyone who wants to connect can find someone. Ready to get going? It’s time to hit the hay, gang. With that in mind, it’s time to get cracking.

It’s All About the Fun

OK, you want a relationship. You’re a modern day-date and you’re open-minded. But not too open minded—you need to be able to filter through the posers, the pretenders, and those who want something else to those who want to be together forever. Maybe you’re more like the latter group, so you’ll need to take your time and exercise caution when it comes to meeting someone new. That being said, if you are looking for a lasting relationship, then you’ll have to be willing to put in a little more work than someone who just wants a one-night stand.

Today, there is no shortage of “hunks” and “gals” willing to meet someone. Who among us hasn’t felt a little creepy about going to meet people by way of a dating app? Consider the fact that your likelihood of meeting that special someone is much higher by going out and finding someone in real life. While some people love the idea of meeting someone online and staying in touch through the app, there is something to be said for the fact that you won’t know everything about your date within the first three minutes. You’re learning new things about someone every time you meet them in person.

I want to make it clear that I am not saying don’t use dating apps—just that be sure to do your research on the person you meet. If you’ve got the app set to “people who want to meet me,” you can limit the number of people you receive right away. The rules of dating are changing fast. To stay on top of it all, we talked to a few experts on love, sex, and relationships. They told us what they think to be the best ways to date in 2013—and how you can avoid being a flaming twinkie if you want to stand out from the crowd.

Don’t Take Things Too Seriously

As in every other part of your life, the best way to ensure happiness with dating is to keep it light and casual. Lauren Santo, a psychiatrist and relationship expert, thinks that most people “take things so seriously in the dating realm that they forget to take it lightheartedly and simply be yourself.” A great way to keep things casual is to avoid setting dates at work. “It’s a no-win situation. You could easily get sucked into serious dates or potential relationships, and then it’s harder to get out of it,” says Santo. “But if it’s casual and you don’t feel like it’s a big deal, you’re less likely to be in the situation.”

Be Yourself

The most important thing you can do to make sure your next date is a successful one is to show up to it with your best self. “Even if you’re friends with a guy in a bar and think, ‘I wonder if he would like me,’ it’s not so obvious to him,” says Santo. “But if you show up at a bar alone, you let him see that you’re not intimidated by yourself and he might be interested.” If you want to be upfront about your intentions, go for it—but as Santo reminds us, know your worth and be confident about it.

Go Out with a Guy You Can Trust

Dating can be stressful. If you are the one who wants to get into a relationship, that stress can be difficult to deal with. “When you are in your 20s, it’s not uncommon to go out with a guy that is just a ‘friend,'” says Lori Gottlieb, a New York City-based psychologist and author. “If you do go out with someone that you cannot trust, it can be a huge relationship stressor.” But Gottlieb says that if you’re not really looking for a relationship and just want to date and have fun, it’s a perfectly acceptable idea.

Be Happy

It’s no secret that dating can be stressful, but not always easy. If you want a fun, casual date with someone
