The inner workings of the software:
In order to understand how the tools work it is necessary to understand how the phase vocoder works.
A phase vocoder works by creating a series of ’band-pass’ filters which separate a sine wave from the audio sound. Each band pass filter represents one frequency band of the sine wave which is shown in the image on the left.The left image shows the curve for the frequency response of the first band pass. The image on the right shows the curve for the amplitude response of the first band pass. It can be clearly seen that the phase Vocoder ’knows’ what is happening in the sound and removes the phase from the frequencies of the sound that are not contributing to the sound we hear and amplifies those which are.

It can be used on two channels at the same time. One channel is used to create drone sounds using the phase vocoder and the other channel can be used for whatever you like.
The Phase Vocoder:
The phase vocoder is a technology that, when used by itself, allows you to create drones. This is how the name of the sound app is derived. In the app, the phase vocoder has been removed and replaced with controls and effects to create the different drones and static sounds.
Basically the app features an oscillator with a rate control, a filter and a pitch shifter. The oscillator will generate a sound and the pitch shifter will alter the frequency of the sound. The pitch shifter will allow you to shift the pitch of the oscillator up and down in octaves, creating an effect similar to a glockenspiel or an xylophone.
The filter will allow you to add ‘phatness’ to the sound by limiting the frequencies that can pass through the filter. When the filter is set to ‘low’ it will limit the frequencies that can pass through the filter. The higher the filter setting the more frequencies will pass through. A setting of ‘high’ is the opposite – it will allow the most frequencies to pass through but only a few frequencies are audible.
There is also a LFO/low frequency oscillator at the bottom of the screen. Using the rate control you can alter the pitch of the oscillator and the filter settings.
Static and Drone sounds:
In the static section of the app, Thaw allows you to create a’snapshot’ of a sound. When a sound is recorded, Thaw will record a few hundred milliseconds of the sound. When this sounds is saved, it will become available in the Snapshots section of the app.
To create a sound from the snapshot, simply drag the mouse over the Snapshot and left click. Then simply change the rate and pitch of the oscillator and adjust the filter settings to find the ‘voice’ of the sound.
Everything else can then be used to create drones.

What’s New in the Thaw?

Thaw is a VST plugin for the 32 bit version of Windows with a similar API to the VST plugins for Mac and Linux.
Thaw consists of a small number of patches that work together to achieve the primary objective of making static and drone sounds using the phase vocoder.
The user interface is simple and intuitive allowing the user to quickly arrange their patches, create and save presets and drag and drop sounds and effects from the hardware control panel.
Below are screenshots showing some of the patches arranged for creating static sounds.
The user interface provides a number of controls to alter the sound:
Pitch: changes the pitch of the incoming sound from a default value of 200 cycles to a maximum of 4000 cycles, 1,000 being the default value.
Gain: Changes the level of the incoming sound. -0.5 is 0db and +0.5 is 6db.
Cutoff: Changes the cutoff frequency of the incoming sound from a default value of 1,250Hz to a maximum of 16,000Hz.
Attack: Changes the attack time of the sound. The value is between 0 (0ms to be short) to 500 (500ms to be long).
There are no parameters to control the decay or release of the sound as these are determined by the ’ringer’ settings of the phase vocoder effects.
Dynamic range is controlled by the ’headroom’ setting of each of the effects.
A simple dialog is provided to display the active patch in a handy list format.
Two parameter sliders are provided to allow direct manipulation of the desired parameters. The user can enter values which will be displayed in the parameter track as a number, or in a fixed format.
A third parameter track is provided to allow editing or matching of the new values, or undo and redo functions.
For ease of use, a toggle switch is provided to allow the user to quickly hide or show all patches, the main window and the main menu.
The user can also delete the main window and main menu by clicking on the ’delete’ button in the top right corner.
A ’Toggle all patches’ button hides all patches and a ’Toggle main window and main menu’ button hides the main window and menu.
Changes to the parameters of the selected patch are tracked in a list in the bottom right corner and can be edited or applied to any patches by selecting them in the list.
