A unique universal playlist editor that can read and write any play list no matter who its original creator or final user is. The format of the files it reads and writes is standard. This allows virtually any playlist type to be read and written, as the only requirement is that the template files be designed as such. All the usual files that are seen with regular play list are supported, and more. So you can edit the ID3 tags, tag them with external ID3 tags, export to MP3, OGG, or WMA from the play list, add pictures, as well as some other types of file.

* A play list can be saved to any format except MP3, which requires the Audacity Format Plugin to be installed, and an additional input source
* Playlists created can be saved as Windows Media, MPEG or CD Audio, but not as WAV
* Playlists can be saved, and imported
* Playlists can be created and edited in any directory
* Playlists can be saved and imported (with full directory structure)
* The program has a Format File Manager which allows any files to be created for any format
* The program can read and write play lists created with any tool
* Playlists may have multiple parts to help with editing. An example of this is that if you want to edit the “Sample” part, just enter this into the “Data” box. The program will not only accept this, but try to parse it into the proper format for you.
* It is allowed for playlists to be split to help with editing
* Files can be dragged over and copied between parts
* All parts of a playlist may be selected
* It can process many folders at once
* Files can be created, and renamed without causing problems
* Files can be deleted, or moved to another folder
* Information about the files, such as in the ID3 tags, is displayed in the right hand list
* Highlighted files may be dragged around to change their order
* It is possible to drag and drop any format of file into a format file window, and it will work, although it is slower than using the normal form
* Drag and Drop moves a file into the playlist without opening up the file, although you do have to select one. If no file type is specified, the

1) As the above three points mention, a Windows 95 machine is required for this program to work. If you are not running Windows 95 then you cannot use this program. It has been tested in Windows NT, but not Windows 98.

3) The reason that “Generic” files are supported, and not just VGM or MIDI files is that there is a limit on what can be put into a VGM or MIDI file format. This program does not need to worry about things like why I don’t want to use specific format, or what can and can’t be done in a file. That is all outside of the job it has to do. As a result the format of files can be a little fiddly, and trying to get different file types to work together can be a bit hard. For this reason there is a lot of trial and error involved. In addition to this, there is the benefit that I do not have to bother with any of the “dummy” formats that do not actually do anything.
4) The format files that this program uses are taken from various sources, as there is no one specific format, and I am not a MIDI or VGM expert. The formats are also only the ones I tested and found worked, but they are here to let you try them if you want. As always there may be other formats that also work.
5) You can read the original manuals of the formats you are using to create play lists, as it will tell you what codes work for what, to read a play list into the Editor, and to display the play list to the user. The Format File Manager in Play List Editor allows you to “import” the formats into the Editor.
6) Play List Editor is able to read play lists as they are created, and so will support saving play lists to where they are created. It also supports setting up templates to specify the files that should be read into the Editor, and what sort of display each file should have. If you are thinking of creating your own format for use in Play List Editor, please see the Programming Issues page to see if you can use any of the codes already available to support the play list format.

The Universal Play List Editor is a Windows 95 Only program which can read, save, and edit almost any play list no matter who it’s original creator or final user is. It does this by virtue of having a Format File Manager which will allow templates for any sort of file type to be created.
Once this is done for any particular format, the Play List Editor will be able to read save and edit files of this format. Format Files can be easily created, or downloaded from here when they become available. It has two aims: to design the best possible interface and read and write user-defined play list
Creating Play Lists
To create a play list first show the folder with the files you want to add to the list on the left. To change the folder click the button with the folder on it (The 5th button down from the top). This will display a window in which you can choose the folder where the files are located. To change which files are displayed, type the extension into the box in the top left of the window, for example to display MIDI files only remove the “.*”, and replace it by “.mid” or “mid” (without the quotes). Once the files are displayed, you are ready to put the ones you want into the play list.
If there are any files already in the list on the right, then remove those you do not want in the list. You can do this by selecting them (multiple selections are OK), and pressing delete, or clicking the delete button (The 3rd button down from the top, looks like a cross). You can then drag those files from the left list to the right list that you do want in the play list. Again, multiple selections are OK, so if you want to drag a whole load of files, just press somewhere near them in the list, and drag over those you want to be selected, then press on the selected files somewhere, and drag them over to the list. You can also drag the same file more than once.
To reorder the files in the play list select the file you want to move in the right hand list, and press the up and down arrows to move it. To change how the files are displayed, right click in the list, and choose the display mode from the menu there. In the right hand list the details view will also show which folder the

Universal Play List Editor is an open source program (MIT licence) that will allow you to read, save, edit, and create play lists with almost any format. The program is set up with an easy-to-use interface to allow you to do so with an ease normally associated with using a spreadsheet. Format files are supported, however most are not, as they use a peculiar “format” for allowing programmers to write their own code. The so-called format has two parts: the header file that defines what to do with a particular format, and the body file which allows the program to record the list you are about to create.
Once a format is defined the Program can read these files and create play lists with the correct specifications, again with the correct specifications. If the code on the body file ends in “=” it will look for that file on the disk, otherwise it will look for the “total number of files” (%N) or “displayed folder” (%D) in the header file. This means that the code could be listed in the header file as for example “Files=%N Folder=%D” which would allow the code to know that there will be a list, it will know that the number of files is defined by a header file, and that it must be looking in the folder defined by the header file for these files to be listed.
Unlike most other programs the Play List Editor comes loaded with dozens of formats for its users, which can be quickly accessed using the main menu, and then selecting the type of file. Even games use these, as the programming is too complicated for most people. The formats are all stored in a single place, and are available for free download from here.
A drawback is that games do not always have their information stored in a format that Play List Editor can use (for example they may have been created with Game Maker, or have just not been created with any rules). Until this can be improved I recommend you use the interface that is displayed in the pictures, as it is so easy to use.
There are several ways to use this program, but I would not recomend using it inside a program, for example when you want to save the list. As you will need it to be able to read the file in the first place, this could lead to a loop. Instead I would use it as a separate application, and let the individual programs that want to use the list just put the files into the list (In the case of
