Ahh, the old WD 1GB USB drive. It was a staple for data storage back in the days, and it still holds some status as that little stick with limited capacity. No, not physical storage in the USB stick, but more or less in the bad sense: it is a capacity issue.
It is the unit of “measurement” for USB sticks. It was called “megabyte” or MB, later MB/s, and so on. A storage capacity on a computer is usually a certain amount of MB/s.
The problem is: not all USB sticks have exactly 1GB capacity. Some have 50MB capacity, some can use a 2MB stick, and so on. Therefore, there is the “MegaByte Unit”, the MB, and the MB/s.
The MB is the old official, possibly the original unit of measurement, and the MB/s is the “modern” unit.
Why is this important? Well, MB/s is probably the easiest unit to calculate, but you can have a USB stick with 1GB capacity, it will still list 50MB capacity. That leads to people buying a 1GB capacity USB stick, thinking they are purchasing 1GB of data storage (of course, they are not), and ending up buying a 50MB capacity USB stick.
In our opinion, it is not a very good deal if people buy a 1GB stick, only to realise later they own 50MB of stick, and it is not useful for storage.
So, to sum it up, we have 2MB, 2GB, 50MB, 2MB/s, and 1GB.
